Mangrove planting project shields coastal village from erosion

Mangrove planting project shields coastal village from erosion

By Wayama Field Team · May 27, 2026

A community-led mangrove restoration effort has completed its first planting phase, with more than eight thousand saplings placed along tidal mudflats vulnerable to storm surge.

Local fishers partnered with NGOs to map safe planting zones and protect existing nurseries. Early monitoring shows reduced wave impact on nearby homes during recent high tides.

Organisers plan to expand the programme next quarter and train youth volunteers in nursery management.
