Colombo coastal cleanup removes over two tonnes of plastic waste

By Nimali Perera · May 27, 2026

Hundreds of volunteers gathered along the western coastline this weekend for a coordinated cleanup led by local environmental groups and the Wayama Earth field team.

Organisers reported that most debris consisted of single-use plastics, fishing nets, and microplastic fragments trapped in sand. Samples have been sent for cataloguing to support a forthcoming policy brief on harbour waste management.

Community leaders are calling for permanent collection points and stronger enforcement of dumping regulations ahead of the next monsoon season.
